New bride, new album for Banky W

New bride, new album for Banky W

New bride, new album for Banky W
Well, not exactly a bride in the actual sense. The rapidly balding R n B heartthrob, Bankole ‘Banky W’ Wellington, has not taken a wife. Rather, his Empire Mates Entertainment, EME, label, where best-selling debutant, Wizkid, also calls home, has announced the signing of its first female act, Niyola, and the completion of an EME album, ‘Empire State of Mind’. To be released exclusively on Nigeria’s premiere digital distribution platform, Spinlet, on Monday, the EME album features its flag-bearers; Banky W, Wizkid, Skales, Niyola, Shaydee, DJ Exclusive, and guest appearances from Ghana-based rapper, XO Senavoe and US-based singer cum actor, Rotimi. The album also contains three fun skits by comedian, Basketmouth.
In a statement by the label boss, he states, “We’re very proud of the EME Album. We took our time to put together a fantastic blend of our talents as a collective, while also showcasing what each artiste is able to do individually. It felt like the right time to drop this record; each artiste is bringing his/her A-game, and the production quality is out of this world. There is something for everybody, songs to dance to, songs to listen to, songs that make you think. We’re very excited about being able to share this with our fans worldwide, and we hope that we’ve been able to live up to and/or surpass their expectations of us. Our work is done. All that remains is for our fans to sit back, relax and press play.”
The label states that it took almost one year to produce the EME album, boasting production from Nigeria’s finest such as Masterkraft, Legendary Beats, Spellz, Sarz, Shizzy and Kid Konnect, together. In regards to its new signings, which also includes Shaydee, the label states, “Empire Mates has come a long way since Banky W and our first single. The entire continent and the rest of the world have accepted and supported us and that support has birthed so many great things. Today, we are happy to announce our expansion, as we take up new talents, new challenges and seek new ways to deliver beautiful African music to the world.”

How D’banj celebrated 32nd birthday

How D’banj celebrated 32nd birthday

How D’banj celebrated 32nd birthday
Last Saturday, D’banj turned 32. Unlike the ritual of champagne popping at ritzy hangouts, the pop star was in Benin, Edo State, entertaining fans and followers of his Koko doctrine. It was the third week of the annual multi-city concert, Star Trek, organised by the Nigeria Breweries Plc. On the bill were Sound Sultan, Tiwa Savage and Flavour. Model cum actor of the Tinsel fame, Gideon Okeke, who is gradually evolving as a substantive concert emcee, handled proceedings that Friday night in the open air venue, Sanfield, in Benin. In the tradition of the Star Trek, a number of local wannabes, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, were given a shot at fame. While some performed poorly, some like BMG, T Wine, Great Doctor, Bolo Yeung and Breezy were a delight to watch.
Prior to D’Banj’s performance, which was the last of the night, Mavin Records First Lady, Tiwa Savage, had entertained the crowd with a short but memorable performance. The leggy songstress, who was performing on the Star Trek bill for the first time, kicked off her performance with O Ma Ga O, from the Solar Plexus MixTape, released under Mavin Records, dovetailing into her other hit songs like Kele Kele Love, Love Me X3 and Without My Heart. Midway into her performance, she paused to render an acapella, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, in memory of the souls that were lost in the Dana air crash of Sunday, June 3rd. It was greeted with a thunderous applause by the ecstatic crowd.
Thereafter came Sound Sultan, who typically performed with the full complement of his band, and Flavour Nabania, who seemed to be on familiar turf as he took the crowd on a journey through contemporary Nigerian highlife.
When it was D’banj’s turn, even those who had become weary and sleepy, stirred into full awareness. He was in his elements, oscillating between old and new songs. Soon, D’banj was joined on stage by his collaborator, rapper, Ikechukwu, who was originally not part of the Star Trek line-up. Apart from D’banj’s sheer infectious energy, the lyrical interplay between him and Ikechukwu was another highlight of the Benin leg of the Star Trek. The following day, the Star Trek train moved to Sapele, Delta State but without D’banj.
Perhaps because of the abundance of entertainment talents in that part of the country, Deltans are presumably hard to please by outsiders. But, the thousands that thronged the Sapele Township Stadium got more than enough value for their N200 gate fee. From home girls, Omawumi to Waje, Sound Sultan, Flavour and Chocolate City rappers, MI and Ice Prince, including even Star Quest 2012 winners, Crystals, it was fun all the way. So much that a young lady who was lucky to join Sound Sultan while performing refused to vacate the stage even after he had finished.

Quintuplets
“Ours is an admixture of joy and pain. But this is not to say that we are ungrateful to God Almighty who blessed us with four children at a go. Our problem is that the challenge is enormous and difficult”. This was the confession of Mr Matthew Amoke, the Okada-rider father of the Nsukka quintuplet delivered in November 2009. Since the birth of the two boys and two girls two years ago, the Amoke family has not found the upkeep of the kids easy.

This is in spite of the fact that added to his Okada business, Amoke also gets some income from his petty trading at the Ogige market, Nsukka where he sells rice and condiments in a cubicle carved out from a stall.

Narrating their agony, Amoke told Daily Sun that the cost of the children’s upkeep increases in geometrical progression while his income and other money come in trickles Cost of feeding As they grow, so the quantity of food they consume increases. Now, they have started eating solid food, they eat like adult, they eat about six times daily and my wife is always busy in the kitchen cooking. We have no maid because we cannot afford it. For this reason, I and my wife are always on our toes round the clock. At night when they wake up to demand one thing or the other, the rest will join suit. My wife is relieved a bit now they have been weaned of breast milk.

They consume not less than N1,500 worth of milk daily. The daily expenditure without corresponding daily income has put stress on my petty trade with the result that, my stock now consists mainly of goods given to me by friends on credit. I nearly drove myself to madness one day as I tried to itemize my expenditure. It was a friend who noticed what I was doing that saved me, he warned me: “my friend don’t try to check your expenditure or else you run mad”.

Their going to school My problem here is two pronged: one is that I need to register the four children at once with about N4, 500 each and this is excluding the school uniform and the rest. The other problem is transporting them to school on a daily basis to and fro, they area too tender to stay on a motorbike, otherwise I would have been using my motorcycle to take them to and from school. What I do is that, I use taxi at a very exorbitant charge to take them to school and also bring them back. I have no money to make a permanent arrangement with a driver.

Scholarship Some people will be saying but the church gave the children scholarship. This is true and for this, we will ever remain grateful to the head pastor who is now on transfer. The fact is that the scholarship covers only school fees. We have to cater for the children in the areas of uniform, daily transportation, and other materials.

Government support Up till now we have not received any assistance from any government. Every assistance we received were from good spirited Nigerians from mainly outside the state. We will ever remain grateful to them. On one occasion we were able to meet the First Lady of the state, the wife of Governor Chime at the Nsukka Local Government Stadium. She admired the kids and promised to take up their matter with her husband. We are eagerly expecting to hear from her.

While thanking our donors we are constrained to renew our appeal for assistance as the lives of the children could be endangered by lack of fund. All financial assistance should be paid to account numbers: Diamond Bank Plc – 0033468114. Intercontinental Bank Plc – 1001141035. Account name: Amoke Matthew O.C.

In Big Brother’s house, marriage is a headache

In Big Brother’s house, marriage is a headache

Goldie
The pairing formula adopted in the ongoing Big Brother StarGame is a source of headache for some members and viewers alike, AKEEM LASISI writes
Like a dog fumbling back to its own vomit, Ghanaian comedian DKB has been profusely apologising for ‘battering’ Sierra Leonean Zainab in the Big Brother House. He compounded the fever that many fans of the Big Brother StarGame are having when he gave Zainab a dirty slap and threatened to inflict more blows on her.
Like the rat that banks on its tiny palm to wipe its face, the lady also tried to fight back with her feeble hands. The fight earned both an expulsion, thus ignominiously ending their dream of winning the $300,000 at stake.
Apart from the fact that DKB cast the first and debilitating stone, he is the man who is supposed to protect a woman. His is thus the butt of shame. Little wonder, he has become the proverbial dog hiding the knife when its head has already been cut off, saying he knows he disappointed himself and his fans.
Before  the assault, the twists that had been trailing the ‘marriage’ element of the 2012 edition of the show had puzzled many viewers. In a bid to jazz up the sensation, the organisers had asked participants to come in pairs. This is a new dimension to it but it has brought frustrations to some members of the house.
When you have a good and winning partner, your chances of emerging victorious are cute since the performance is working for the two of you. Apart from the fact that the scenarios also work vice versa, some housemates have simply constituted a nightmare for their partners since once you are out for whatever reason, you are simply going to sink together.
The case of Nigerian representative, Ola seems understandable. He developed hypertension and had to quit. But that means that his partner, Chris, had to wave ‘bye’ to the house despite the fact that he is ordinarily fit to be. Yet more acute is the case of Angolan couple Esperanca and Seydou.  Esperanca’s persistent move to exit, citing depression – while some say she  simply became envious of Seydou – has seen both out.
For some Nigerian fans, there is also the headache concerning the performance of the last compatriot in the house, Goldie. They feel she is spending too much time in the kitchen. The thinking is that such a passive attitude does not bring out all her potential, which can in turn affect her chances.

Kashim Shettima
The Borno State Government has called on the Federal Government to stop giving it a “step-child” treatment, by trying to confine the Boko Haram insurgence to the state. Rather, it urged FG to “come up with an intervention package for the reconstruction and the rehabilitation of citizens affected by the security problems in the state.”

The Borno State government’s position is the outcome of a three-day retreat, organized for political office holders, to prepare them for the “challenges of governance and chart a new development agenda,” for the state.

The retreat, held May 21- May 25, with the theme “Borno Quantum Leap Project: Beyond the Present Challenges,” was attended by Governor Kashim Shettima, his deputy, SSG and all other political appointees. In the communiqué issued at the end of the retreat, state government emphasized the need for political appointees to key into the various programmes and plans, aimed at pulling the state back to the path of peace and development.

The communiqué, signed by Zanna Malam Gana and Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir, as chairman and secretary of the organising committee respectively, noted: “As much as there are security challenges confronting the government and people of Borno State, there is the need to impress it upon the Federal Government and the larger Nigerian society that the problem of insecurity, especially the Boko Haram insurgency, is a national challenge and should never be seen to look like the preserve of a particular enclave.

“Conflict is caused by a constellation of factors, and experiences show that constructive engagement through mediation and dialogue remains the best ways of resolving conflicts. The Federal Government should collaborate with the Borno State Government in finding a lasting solution to the problems of conflicts and insecurity.

“The current problems arose from the collapse of social values, failure of leadership, neglect of the youth, leading to unemployment, abject poverty, illiteracy and frustrations. Hence the urgent need for a radical review of certain government policies that will tend to carry vulnerable groups like women and the youth along.

“In the face of very serious security challenges and unnecessary political distractions, this administration under Shettima has initiated good programmes as they affect agriculture, education, health, poverty alleviation, water supplies and security, and there is the need to adopt the governors laudable initiatives, a deliberate state policies.

“That agriculture having been the mainstay of the state economy should form the fulcrum of all development initiatives, to this end, the Government is implored to explore avenues of adopting modern agricultural technology, thereby the need to inaugurate a taskforce that will midwife the agricultural initiatives.

“The Federal Government to desist from giving Borno State the step-child treatment and come up with an intervention package for the reconstruction of the state and the rehabilitation of citizens affected by the security problems in the state.

“The Federal Government should look into the possibility of encouraging the full exploitation of the solid minerals potentials of Borno State, especially as it affects oil exploration around the Lake Chad basin, recharging the fast declining waters of the Lake Chad, speed up the completion of the 33kva power line, encourage industrialization, address ecological problems including desertification in the northern part of the state and erosion in the southern part.

“The retreat noted with concern the pervasive corruption amongst public office holders to the effect that it often generates public odium. It therefore called upon participants to strive and live above board in all their dealings, so that Borno will make the difference in the area of anti-corruption.

Christians in the Southeast have threatened to attack mosques and palaces of Islamic leaders in the zone in retaliation of incessant bombings on Christians and churches in the North by Boko Haram. They made this resolution yesterday in Enugu through the zonal Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman and Bishop of Enugu Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma following last Sunday’s bombing of the Christ Chosen Church in Jos, Plateau State and another Church in Biu, Borno State.

Bishop Chukwuma who addressed newsmen at the Bishop Court, Enugu, said  if nothing was done urgently by the Federal Government and Islamic leaders in the North to stop Boko Haram, “Christian leaders will have no other option than to begin retaliation on their mosques and emir palaces.” He lamented that attacks on Christians in the North every Sunday had become a weekly ritual, saying that it was giving Christian leaders a lot of concern as it was increasingly militating against the security of Christians in their worship places.

His words: “Therefore, we are moved to give this last warning to the Federal Government and Moslem leaders to issue a check and warning to their subordinates because if this should continue, we, as Christian, leaders will have no option than to begin retaliation on their mosques and emir palaces.

“We cannot fold our arms and allow our churches and worshippers to be maimed for no just cause. This act of bombing by this Boko Haram is capable of causing another civil war because the Biafran war was not as severe as this and there was war against Biafra. We are, therefore, warning that this is capable of causing another civil war and we are ready for it.

“For me as the Southeast CAN chairman, I’m ready to lead people with Ogbunigwe (the Biafran bomb used during the civil war); this Ogbunigwe will be more severe than the Boko Haram bombs. And we want to warn them that they know that they are building mosques in the South and have Moslem communities in the South which we have been sparing, but if they don’t stop, we shall begin retaliation and that will be the beginning of another civil war in Nigeria.”

The bishop said they were giving the Islamist sect last warning, saying that if they continued in the act against their Christian brethrens in the North, they would retaliate. “However, we call on our Christian brethrens in the North to be very much encouraged that we Christians in the South are not keeping quiet, we are praying for them and ready to support them and defend them on this continual carnage which we continuously say cannot stop Christianity from growing.

“And nobody in this country will ever Islamize this nation; we will never and we shall resist any form of violence to disturb this present government because it is a Christian-led government or the spread of Christianity in this country, we will resist it absolutely and we have no apology to anybody.

“We in the southern part of Nigeria, particularly Southeast, have seen civil war and I have said this so many times, we are not afraid of war anymore; and we are ready, therefore, to go to war to defend our Christian brethrens in the North and we are saying enough is enough because it is obvious now that Boko Haram is out to deal with Christians and Christians will not keep quiet anymore,” he fumed.

The bishop said why Christians had endured thus far was that they were thinking that the security agencies would be able to stem the situation, noting that it has now become obvious that the Boko Haram menace was not abating.

Bishop Chukwuma, said that Christians are now ready for war: “I am ready to mobilise Ogbunigwe from the Southeast to face them, so Boko Haram should be warned because we still have people in the East who can manufacture this Ogbunigwe. And they should be careful because by the time we mobilise MASSOB, mobilise the Odua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), mobilise the militant, Boko Haram will have no place to go to,” the bishop noted.

Uduaghan’s abductors demand N50m

Emmanuel Uduaghan
Gunmen who kidnapped a cousin to the Governor of Delta State, 75-year-old Sam Uduaghan, on Thursday demanded N50m before his release.
The kidnappers had struck on a day the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, was receiving patrol vehicles purchased by the state government in Asaba.
Our correspondent learnt that the kidnappers had already contacted the family to immediately pay the sum or risk the consequences.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Charles Muka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the development, however said the police were against the payment of ransom to suspected criminals.
But Emmanuel Uduaghan, the victim’s son who bears the same name as the governor, denied that the kidnappers ever got in contact with the family .
However, it was gathered that the family’s position was to avoid any situation that would compromise the safe return of the septuagenarian.
“None of my family members has spoken with the kidnappers. We have not spoken with our father too, so the demand of N50m ransoms is not true,” the victim’s son said.

Baby Abdulwahab
For millions of residents of Mushin and Ijeshatedo, two bustling, sprawling Lagos communities, May 11, 2012 would remain an indelible date. It was the day a woman, Kikelomo, a practising Christian, reportedly delivered a baby boy at a spiritual clinic operated by a white garment church in the area. The baby was said to have glided out of his mother’s womb with his right hand tightly clutching a gold-coloured mini-Quran.

The baby has since been christened Abdulwahab Iyanda Aderemi Amin-Olorun Irawo, at an elaborate Islamic ceremony in Mushin. The event was attended by top Islamic clerics from within and outside Lagos.

Expectedly, the strange development has been generating heated debates among Christians, Muslims, adherents of indigenous religions as well as the non-religious.  The reporter learnt that the Islamic holy book would have been thrown away after the baby was delivered but for the mum’s insistence that her own mother should be informed about the development before any action was taken.

Since the incident, various reports have been making the rounds concerning the baby and his parents. The mother, Kikelomo Ilori, was described as an unmarried lady who became pregnant for her lover, Abolore Irawo. According to the reports, when the prospective father was told that the affair had resulted into pregnancy, he urged the lady to go for an abortion. She allegedly told reporters who had thronged her temporary abode at her mother’s place on Sonde Street, Ijesatedo that during the pregnancy, she was always visiting the spiritual leader, Senior Rev. Victoria Dada, (whose church would later serve as maternity ward for her) for prayers and counselling because she felt neglected by the man who impregnated her.

“When I refused to abort the pregnancy, he deserted me, saying, ‘that is your own problem,” several reports had quoted her as saying.

I never planned to abort pregnancy But when Daily Sun met with Kikelomo a few days later for more explanations on some emerging controversies on her child, the story had been considerably altered. By then, she had relocated from Ijesatedo to what she called her matrimonial home in Aderibigbe Street, Masha, Surulere. First, she denied that she was an unmarried lady. According to the young woman, her name was not Kikelomo Ilori but Kikelomo Irawo. She said she was only at her mother’s place temporarily, insisting that she had now moved to her husband’s place.

Reacting to reports that she was just a girlfriend to the father of her baby, she retorted: “If a man and a woman will get married, won’t they start from being friends?”

She was also reported to have attempted to abort the pregnancy when her lover deserted her. According to the reports published in several Nigerian dailies and online media, she was even shocked when she discovered the baby was intact despite attempts to terminate her pregnancy. “When I discovered that the baby was still growing, I rushed back to the nurse who injected me after explaining the problem. She was surprised that the baby was still intact. I asked her to give a ‘D and C,’ but she refused. She said the blood had already formed and that it would be like killing somebody.  When it was nine months, the baby didn’t come. When it was eleven months, I told my friend, who took me to Morning Star Church, there I delivered the baby,” a national daily quoted Kikelomo as saying.

In a chat with our reporter, however, Kikelomo insisted that she never attempted to terminate the pregnancy. She said those saying she took drugs to abort the baby were just on a flight of fancy.

We got no money The new mum and her famous baby were said to have received some substantial amount of money from an eminent legal luminary and former Attorney General of Nigeria and the Lagos State government. But Kikelomo said those are also lies from the pit of hell.

Since the baby’s birth, everyone has been trooping to Sonde Street, Ijeshatedo to catch a glimpse of Kikelomo and her ‘miracle child.’ The house has become a tourist’s attraction with different people crowding there daily to congratulate the mum, offer prayers for the child or to give the baby some gifts.

When the reporter visited the place early in the week, Kikelomo’s mum, popularly called Say Mama by neighbours, was enraged after discovering the caller was a journalist. She told the reporter that the family would no longer grant any interview on the baby. “You journalists are just writing false stories about the baby and our family. I picked up a Yoruba paper today and they were writing nonsense. They said prominent Nigerians gave us millions of naira but we haven’t received anything,” the elderly woman said.

The reporter assured her that the reports would be fair to her family, assuring her that there would be no falsehood in his story. After a while, the elderly woman said the baby and her mother were no longer with her.

“They have gone to the palace of the Oba of Mushin, Chief Fatai Irawo. Go there and interview them, but I don’t know if they will give you audience. But don’t go there today because they won’t attend to you. I will also call them and persuade them to attend to you.”

So, off to Coker Street in Mushin this reporter went the next day. But it was another brick wall that the reporter met at the Oba’s palace. He was told the traditional ruler was in no mood to entertain journalists on the matter. He was also told that the baby and his mother were not in the palace. “The baby and his mother have moved to the father’s place in Masha area of Lagos,” a man who simply identified himself as Ayo told this reporter. “The woman’s husband is a relative of the Oba. He lives in England but he’s around and would likely accede to your request for an interview because he is enlightened,” he said as he gave the reporter the couple’s address.

Naturally, the reporter hailed a commercial motorbike, better known as okada and to Masha he went. The building is an unpainted yet magnificent storey building on Aderibigbe Street. After several knocks on the gate and no response, the reporter and another colleague were joined by two elderly women, one of whom had a striking resemblance with Kikelomo. The two women called out from outside the gate, and Kikelomo appeared on the balcony upstairs, cuddling Abdulwahab. As the women went inside, the reporter quickly went upstairs with them.

Much falsehood being spread Once in the family’s large and expensively furnished living room, Kikelomo became suspicious. Once she got to know that her unknown visitor was a reporter, she became hostile. She said she wouldn’t speak, accusing reporters of spreading rumours about her and using her baby’s pictures to make money.

She was persuaded by the reporter and the two ladies. She later succumbed, warning, however, that she must not be misquoted as her husband had asked her not to talk to reporters anymore. She said though the prominent people mentioned in some dailies had not given the family any money, ordinary people have been bringing gifts for her boy. “Almost everyone who has called to see the baby brought gifts for him. If you give him a gift, he would pray for you,” she said smiling. She said it was true that the baby held a miniature Quran wrapped in a plain nylon at birth, adding that the holy book had bloodstains at the edges even though the Quran itself wasn’t soiled. She said the Quran was taken to the Chief Imam of Lagos who eventually unwrapped and confirmed it as the Holy Quran. She said no part of the holy book was missing. She said her husband has stored the Quran in his safe for safekeeping when the reporter called.

She regretted that journalists also wrote damaging reports about the woman in whose church she delivered her baby, saying the church leader almost expelled her from the church. She told the reporter that the woman wasn’t in town but emphasised that the cleric had decided against granting any interviews again since she was being misquoted.

Kikelomo said she wasn’t a member of the church, though she had been a member of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church. She said she only went to Rev Dada’s church to be delivered of her baby.  Has she now become a Muslim, you asked. She merely smiled. The two ladies answered for her, saying since the birth of the miracle baby, Kikelomo had automatically become one. She didn’t fault the women.

I did not mastermind bribery scandal – Jonathan

I did not mastermind bribery scandal – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said there was no truth in widespread insinuation that his government was orchestrating the $620,000 bribery scandal involving the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee on the fuel subsidy, Mr. Farouk Lawan, and an oil businessman, Mr. Femi Otedola.
Jonathan said this in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in Abuja.
The President’s aide described the insinuation that the scandal was a ploy by Jonathan and the executive arm of government to unseat the leadership of the House as “lame, diversionary, totally false and baseless.”
Abati also told our correspondent in an exclusive interview that despite the bribery scandal, Jonathan would not stop the action he had already initiated on the implementation of the report of the committee.
The President said notwithstanding the development on the scandal, his directive to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN), on the report of the probe committee, as adopted by the House, had not changed.
He said that he expected that all those indicted in the report would be duly investigated and prosecuted if a prima facie case of misconduct was established against them.
The presidential statement reads, “The Presidency denounces the lame and diversionary attempt by some newspapers to drag the person and office of the President into the very unsavoury bribery scandal involving the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Fuel Subsidy Probe Ad Hoc Committee and a well-known petroleum products marketer.
“The mischievous insinuation in today’s editions of the newspapers that the entire affair, in which the two key players have publicly confessed their roles, is part of a plot by President Goodluck Jonathan and the executive arm of government to unseat the leadership of the House of Representatives, is totally false and baseless.
“For the benefit of unwary members of the public who may be deceived by the political innuendoes now being woven into the subsidy probe bribe affair, President Jonathan wishes to affirm that he has absolutely no reason or desire to meddle in the affairs of the House of Representatives and its leadership.
“Neither the President nor anyone acting on his request or order has anything to do with the scandal that has sadly engulfed the House ad hoc committee on fuel subsidy. The attempt to drag the Presidency into the matter is entirely speculative and without factual foundation.
“Against the background of its avowed commitment to the effective prosecution of the war against corruption in Nigeria, the Presidency notes with satisfaction that given the seriousness of the scandal, the House of Representatives has already recalled its members from recess for a special session to deliberate on it tomorrow.”
The House on Wednesday sent notice out to its members to report for an emergency session on Friday (today). Though the notice sent by the Clerk of the House, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, did not specify the agenda for the session, some members had told The PUNCH that the bribery scandal would be the main subject for debate.
The fear has been expressed in some quarters that the bribery scandal currently rocking the probe panel would make Jonathan to push aside the document without proper implementation.
But Abati said such fear was unnecessary as the President had not issued any other directive to invalidate the earlier one handed down to the AGF.
He said as far as the President was concerned, both the bribery allegation and the report of the ad hoc committee were currently before security agencies who he believed would do a thorough job on both.
“When the President received the report of the House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee, he made a presidential directive. Has that directive been changed?
“That directive has not been changed. Both the bribery allegation and the report are before security agencies and they will do a thorough job on both of them,” Abati said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday arraigned Mr. Adegboye London and Mr. Sylvanus Benedict before Justice Idris Kutigi of FCT High Court sitting in Bwari, Abuja, on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and fraudulent conversion of funds.

Before taking their plea, the prosecuting counsel, Gift Odibo sought the court’s consent to file a motion on notice to amend a two-count charge filed earlier in the court which was granted. The accused persons pleaded not guilty to both charges when read to them. The prosecution consequently asked for a date for the commencement of trial.

But counsel to the accused persons, Mr. J.A. Ako, informed the court that he had filed a motion for bail. The prosecuting counsel, Odibo objected to the application on the ground that she was only served the motion in the court. She added that she could not respond orally and would need time to prepare a written response to the bail application. While adjourning the matter to June 19 for hearing of the bail application, Justice Kutigi ordered that the suspects be remanded in EFCC custody.

The accused persons, who were chairman and secretary respectively of Mbatoo Co-operative Society, were arrested following a petition from the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. The petitioner alleged that the accused persons fraudulently diverted a grant of N4,826,850 from the N120 million World Bank/IDA loan. The facility was part of the $10 million micro grant programme designed as a poverty alleviation scheme for artisans and small-scale miners and mining communities.

According to the petition, the accused persons were given the N4,826,850 for the procurement of Atlas copco XAS 47 Air Compressor, Jack hammer with accessories and diaphragm water pump, but fraudulently converted the grant for other purposes

Lagos — Dana Air  management has put structures in place to ensure prompt payment of benefits to families of those who lost their lives in the tragic accident of Sunday, June 3, 2012.
Consequently, it has opened three dedicated toll-free lines, manned by well trained personnel, solely for claims administration and payment procedures.
Within 24 hours of the unfortunate incident, the airline had set up a Crisis Management Centre at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2) to assist families and relatives of victims with useful information.
The airline’s decision to open dedicated toll-free lines, said Jacky Hathiramani, Chief Executive Officer of Dana Air, is to make it easier for the bereaved to get necessary details on payment of claims.
Teams comprising Dana Air officials and trained counsellors have been visiting the families to condole with them, as well as to provide information on requirements for speedy payment of benefits to the next-of-kin.
“We appreciate that no level of compensation will bring back your much loved one. Nevertheless, we are making arrangements as quickly as possible to compensate every bereaved family in accordance with the law that governs tragedies such as this, and in honour of our duty to you and others”, a letter signed by Hathiramani to the families of the deceased stated.
Hathiramani also stated: “We do not imagine that this will make up for the pains that you are going through but we, however, hope that this lessens your pain knowing that you are not alone in these difficult times.”
Dana Air insurers, aLondonconsortium, are already well advanced in the payment process, and the first (interim) payments should be made shortly to the families of those passengers who lost their lives.
Also urgent steps have been taken by the insurers to identify the families of the Iju-Ishaga community and establish the extent of the losses to enable appropriate calculations of the compensation to be made.

President Goodluck Jonathan
The Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, has said the President won’t stay more than eight years in office.
Gulak said this on Wednesday during a courtesy call on him by the North Central Women Forum led by a former member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Amina Aliyu.
Gulak also promised to implement the 35 percent affirmative action for women in board appointments.
He said, “Please take the gospel of peace and tolerance irrespective of your religion and ethnicity to them because this country belongs to all of us and God has given us President Goodluck Jonathan. Goodluck Jonathan is the President today but he is not going to stay more than eight years. Nigeria belongs to all of us and not for one person.
“Without the women our democracy will not be complete. I have seen it all during the campaign and Mr. president appreciates the role of women in our democracy and the role the women played in installing this administration. That is the reason the President gave more than 35 per cent in his appointment.”
Gulak added, “I will also urge you the women in the North Central that peace is what we need in this country. We are happy and glad that the North Central is relatively peaceful than the North East. This government relies on women because the young people and children who are used by the mischief makers are your children.
“All of us must say enough is enough for these mischief makers. The history of this country cannot be written without mentioning the role of women who played important roles during the pre-colonial era, including the Aba Women riot (of 1929) which gingered the independence of this country.

Controversy as two families

Controversy as two families

lay claim to stolen baby

On June 14, 2012 ·
BY VINCENT UJUMADU
AWKA – THE Imo State police command is currently battling to ascertain the real parents of a baby stolen from Onitsha in 2010 as two families are laying claim to the same baby.
The baby, Emmanuel Chimaobi Adinna Okoro, who was born on 9th August 2010, was allegedly stolen from his parents who reside at Awada-Obosi, a suburb of Onitsha in Anambra State by a lady who pretended to be his aunt.
However, when the news of the disappearance of little Emmanuel got to his parents, Mr. and Mrs Chinedu Okoro, who were not in the house when the incident took place,  immediately reported the case to the Awada police station and the police began the search for the stolen baby who was at the time of his theft, 18 months old.
The efforts of the police paid off when a suspect who gave her name as Ngozi Okeke was arrested as she allegedly came back to Onitsha from Imo State to steal more babies.
On learning of the arrest, the family of the stolen Emmanuel approached the police with their house help from whom the little baby was stolen and identified the suspect on the spot.
However, following the alleged reluctance of the police to release the baby to them, counsel to the family of the stolen baby, Mr. Ignatius Umennabude, petitioned the Imo State Commissioner of Police, demanded that the police release the child to his parents since they have provided necessary documents concerning the child.
Vanguard gathered that the case took a different dimension when the parents of the baby went to the Imo State police command to claim their baby, but were denied access to him on the ground that another woman was also claiming the same baby.
The baby in question is presently in the custody of the social welfare officer in the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
According to Umennabude, there was confusion when the Deputy Police Commissioner, DCP, in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, CID, in Imo State told the family of Emmanuel that there was another lady who had lodged a complaint that she gave birth to a baby boy who she left under the care of a certain nurse who was at that time being detained by police in connection with child trafficking.
The woman, Vanguard gathered, also told the police that the stolen child, who had been identified by the Okoro family in Onitsha as their son, was also her son, noting that she gave birth to the baby while still in school and decided to leave him with the nurse to help her finish her education.
She was said to have told the police that when she came back from school, she could not find her baby and the nurse.
Though the suspect was said to have confirmed that the little Emmanuel belongs to the Okoro family, she, however, could not account for the whereabouts of the son of the other woman in her custody.
The Imo State command was said to be insisting that there must be a DNA test to ascertain the true parentage of the stolen baby.

MAIDUGURI— FIVE suspected armed robbers, yesterday, killed two policemen and a staff of Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State and carted away millions of naira that was meant for the payment of salary of the local government employees.
Witnesses said the police had escorted the staff of the finance department of the local government, who withdrew the unspecified amount of money at a new generation bank in Maiduguri, the state capital, but were intercepted along Magumeri-Gubio highway.
A staff of the local government told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that the armed robbers who drove in a white Starlet saloon car at about 2.30pm, intercepted the vehicle carrying the police escort and the local government officials.
The source said: “They brandished sophisticated guns and shot the victims before they took away all the money that was withdrawn from the bank.”
Chairman of the local government said: “Nobody can say from where the gunmen came. The unfortunate thing had happened. Lives have been lost and colossal amount of money robbed.”
He said he had informed top officials of the Borno State government and security agencies. “We have also recovered the dead bodies for burial,” he added.
Police spokesman in the state, Mr. Gideon Jubrin, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident and promised that he will get back to this reporter as soon as he gets details.
Similar robbery incidences were carried out early this year when some armed robbers killed and took away the salaries of Jere, Kaga, Shani, and kala-Balge local government areas.

Sanusi, was last Saturday installed as the Dan Majen of Kano by the Emir of Kano Ado Bayero.
The installation came barely a week after the bank lost eight of its top officials in the ill fated Dana plane that crashed on June 3.

It was gathered that he spent a short time in the office before leaving.
